Richard “Dick” Clemen, 81, of Manchester, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021, at his home surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 25, 2021 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, with Reverend Gabriel Anderson officiating.

Visitation was held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. Friends could also call from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday morning at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home.

Interment: St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester.

He was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Dyersville, the son of Henry and Edna (Leigh) Clemen. He attended St. Mary’s School in Manchester. He worked for Jasper Construction.

On Jan. 14, 1961, he was united in marriage to Mary Rosanne Loop at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. Eight children were born to this union. In October of 1961, Dick started C&D Construction with Francis Deutmeyer. Later, Dick owned C&D solely doing land improvement work, cement work, and carpentry. He retired in 2011.

Dick enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards, and telling a good joke. He was an active member of St. Mary Church, serving as an usher, communion minister, homebound minister, and on the buildings and grounds committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He belonged to ILICA and was State President in 1974. He was later elected to be on the Delaware County Fair Board and served on the board for 21 years, being President for many years. Dick was also on the Pork Producers Grill Team, serving as President of the organization for several years.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, of 60 years; Thomas (Rita) Clemen of Epworth, Mark (Lori) Clemen of Manchester, Phillip (Nancy) Clemen of Virginia Beach, Va., Mary Alice (Bill) Hallock of Volga, Andrew (Michelle) Clemen of Manchester, Rebecca Clemen- (Timothy) Salow of Manchester, Kristina (Trent) Peters of Carson City, Mich., and Carolyn (Jay) Taylor of Volga. He is survived by 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings Bernadette Fessler of Earlville, Jean (Roger) Palmer of Manchester, Darlene Kafer of Manchester, and Charles (JoAnne) Clemen of Backus, Minn. Brother-in-law John Pape of Edgewood, sisters-in-law Kathy Parent-Clemen of Masonville, Nancy Deutmeyer of Palo, Susan Crouch of Cedar Rapids, and Jane (Dick) Griswold of Winthrop; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law; granddaughter Amanda McDonald; great-granddaughter, River Jean Clemen; his siblings Mary Catherine (Herman) Helmrichs, Dorothy (Merle) Helmrich, Robert (Helen) Clemen, Theresa Pape, and Kenneth Clemen; brothers-in-law Robert Fessler, Sylvester Kafer, Francis Deutmeyer, and Bob Crouch.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s School of Manchester, IA (132 W Butler St., Manchester, IA 52057).
