Vernon J. Becker, 87, of Hopkinton, Iowa, passed away at 10:15 a.m., Sunday, March 18, 2018 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.
Friends and relatives of Vernon may call from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, March 22, 2018 at the Reiff Funeral Home in Dyersville, Iowa, where a wake service will be held at 6: p.m., the Dyersville American Legion Service will be held at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friends may also call after 9 a.m. on Friday, March 23rd at the funeral home.
Services for Vernon will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 23, 2018 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Worthington, Iowa with Rev. Dennis Quint Presiding. Burial will be held in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Worthington, Iowa, with full military honors afforded by the Dyersville American Legion Post #137.
He was born November 13, 1930 in Dyersville, Iowa son of Reynold and Erma (Gudenkauf) Becker. He received his education in the Hopkinton rural country schools. On September 6, 1951 he was united in marriage to Mae E. Horsfield at St. John’s Catholic church in Placid, Iowa, She preceded him in death on May 28, 2009. He farmed his entire life in the Worthington area.
He was an Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Worthington, IA a member of the Dyersville American Legion Post #137 and a member of the Knights of Columbus –Dyersville Council #1734 and a member of the 4th Degree Dubourg Assembly #1573. He also served on the Swiss Valley Ag Board for many years.
He is survived by five children, Maribeth (Pat) Potter of Cascade, IA, Mike Becker of Hopkinton, IA, Steve (Sheila) Becker of Dyersville, IA, Rita (Jerry) McClain of Bondurant, IA, Sue (Dan) Tauke of Dyersville, IA; 13 grandchildren, Jeremy (Julie) Potter, Jason (Jenn) Potter, Kinsey, Lucas, and Logan Johnson, Natalie Becker, Aaron (Erin) Becker, Stephanie Becker, Brandon and Blake McClain, Matt, Mitch and Nate Tauke; 10 great grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Carrie Johnson-Becker of Hopkinton, IA; 5 siblings, Therese Melchert of Robbins, IA, Ethel (Kenny) Hosch of Monticello, IA, Gib (Helen) Becker of Cedar Rapids, IA, Janet Marbach of Manchester, IA, and Virginia (Bill) Uhlenkamp of Prairieberg, IA; and a sister-in-law, Kay Becker of Hopkinton, IA.
He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenny Becker; and 2 brothers-in-law, Vernon Melchert and Jack Marbach.
The family would like to thank the Doctors and Nursing staff at Mercy Medical Center and Manor care in Dubuque for all the wonderful care given to Vernon.
