Hopkinton - Mrs. Martha Benter, 72, a resident of this vicinity for many years passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. N. Mesch, in South Hopkinton, Wednesday, March 28, following an extended illness.

Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Manchester Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Rev. W. A. Adix officiated. Burial was in the Earlville Cemetery.

Martha Augusta Tesch was born in Lassan, Germany March 23, 1879, a daughter of Lutheric (Ludwig) and Marie Lange Tesch. She was educated in the schools of Germany and grew to womanhood there.

On October 30, 1898, she married Ferdinand J. Benter, and they resided in Germany for several years. Coming to America in 1910, they lived on a farm east of Delhi and later moved to the Hopkinton vicinity and operated a farm in the River Valley neighborhood. In 1936 they moved to a farm near Ryan and four years later retired to Manchester where the home has been since.

Her husband who passed away in 1948 and eight children preceded her in death. She was a member of the Lutheran faith and followed its teachings.

Surviving are six sons: Ferdinand and Fred Benter of Hopkinton; William Benter of Dike; Walter Benter of Cedar Rapids; Martin Benter of Monticello and Rudolph Benter, address unknown; also two daughters, Mrs. William Thies of Clark, S. D., and Mrs. Nick Mesch of Hopkinton; 24 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Also four sisters, Mrs. William Haar and Mrs. Richard Ritter of Dubuque, Mrs. Marie Nagusseg and Mrs. Freda Burtzloff of Lassan, Germany.
