Hawk Eye, The (Burlington, IA) — Tuesday, September 21, 2004

Born April 30, 1939, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert J. "Red" and Lucille Hamberg Smith. On Oct. 12, 1959, he married Valentina G. Chomycia in Burlington.

Mr. Smith worked for Modern Welding and the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant. In 1971, he moved to Dubuque and worked as a production supervisor for various manufacturers.

He attended Burlington High School. He was an Air Force veteran, serving from 1956 to 1960, where he served as an airborne radio operator of a MAAG unit in the South Pacific and Asian Theaters. He retired to Dyersville in 2001. He was a member of the Dubuque Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 568. In his younger years, he enjoyed archery and building model ships. His interests included reading and corresponding and researching on his computer.

Survivors include two sons, Kevin J. Smith of Earlville and Johnnie Smith of Dubuque; one daughter, Kristina Roth of Galena, Ill.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one brother, Jerry Smith of Burlington; and his former wife, Tina Hill of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

The memorial service for Mr. Smith was Monday at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Earlville, with the Rev. Roger McKinstry officiating. Burial with military rites by Co. D 109th AVN of the Iowa Army National Guard in Boone was in Fairview Cemetery in Earlville.
