Sherman William Baker, son of John and Harriet Street Baker, was born July 2,1895, in Grand River, Decatur County and died April 13,1992, at his home in Grand River at the age of 96.

Mr. Baker attended Funktown School and farmed with his father. At the age of 15 years, he went to Plainview, S. D. with his family where they homesteaded for one year.

He married Gerna Boles on June 21,1916. The couple were the parents

of three children, Pauline, Eugene and Keith. They lived their life around

Grand River, except for three years near Kellerton. The couple retired and moved into Grand River in 1970.

Mr. Baker attended the Grand River United Methodist Church as long as he was able. He served on the Grand River Mutual Telephone board for 22 years and for 19 years he was a member of the board of the Clarke Electric Cooperative of Osceola. Mr. Baker was also a Township trustee of Decatur County for a number of years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, Gerna; sister Hazel Turtle and a brother, Ralph Baker.

Mr. Baker is survived by daughter, Pauline Andrew and her husband, Griffin, of Grand River; two sons, Eugene Baker and his wife, Mary, of Creston and Keith Baker and his wife, Gertrude, of Grand River, sister, Helen Van Laar, of Grand River, brother, Frank Baker and his wife, Delma, of Las Vegas, Nev.; brothers-in-law, Noel Boles and his wife, Wilda, Mansell Boles and his wife, Vera, of Grand River, and Verle Boles of Mount Ayr, sisters-in-law, Verda Van Laar and her husband John, of Grand River, Marie Boles of Van Wert and Ermell Pennock of Osceola; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Baker were held at 2 p.m. April 15,1992, at the Grand River United Methodist Church with Pastor Jack Kendall officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery near Grand River. Services were conducted by Slade -O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.
