DENNIS BAKER

Dennis Hubert Baker, son of Robert Carl and Bessie Moren Baker, was born July 17, 1923, at Grand River and died April 29, 1995, at his home near Weldon. He was 71.

Mr. Baker graduated from Van Wert High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in January 1943 and served until January 1956 [1946] most of the time in New Guinea and the Phillipines.

He married Marjorie Ackerman on Sept. 5, 1947, in Kansas City, Mo. They were the parents of two children, Ida Ann and Ray Dean. He lived and farmed for most of his life in Decatur County.

Mr. Baker was baptized into the Van Wert Christian Church on April 11, 1954. He managed Little League ball for 11 years and loved to work with kids. His family and grandchildren meant a lot to him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Bessie Baker and a sister, Holly Anderson.

Mr. Baker is survived by his wife; daughter Ida West and her husband, Wayne West [Toots], of Weldon; son Ray Baker and his wife Carla Baker of Van Wert; five grandchildren, Mickey West, Lorie Sherry, Billy Baker, Johnny Richardson and Sean Baker; two great grandchildren, Augustus Sherry and Austin West; three brothers Edgar Baker of Kansas City, Mo., Harold Baker and his wife Frances Baker, of Hanover, Kan., and Gerald Baker and his wife, Wilma Baker of Pismo Beach, California; three sisters, June Collins of LaVerne, Calif., Martini Ries and her husband Keith Ries of Gilbert, Arizona, and Lois Moreno and her husband Frank Moreno of Vallejo, Calif., two special nephews Steve and Gary Anderson; other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Baker were May 2 at Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Pastor Dorsey Derrick officiating. Burial was in the Van Wert Cemetery with military honors by the Van Wert veterans.

[Transcribers note: Dennis was known in his younger days as a really fine baseball player and played on town teams] Also, a half brother Albert Baker and a half sister Grace was not noted in the obituary and both pre deceasing Dennis.]
