Leah Jean Nelms, age 90, formerly of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of Arvel Edward and Grace May (Haworth) Hamby, was born September 3, 1927, in Kansas City, Missouri. She died at the Mount Ayr Health Care Center in Mount Ayr, Iowa on Saturday, March 24, 2018.

Leah grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and Phoenix, Arizona, where she graduated from high school. She worked for Motorola in Phoenix before her marriage to Lawrence Edwin Nelms on April 10, 1955. They were blessed with three daughters, Angela, Paula, and Betty. Over the years the family lived in Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, and Michigan. After Lawrence’s death in 1972, Leah moved to Independence, Missouri before moving to Lamoni, Iowa in 1978. The past four years, she lived in the Mount Ayr Nursing Home.

Leah was an artist even since she could hold a pencil. She loved to paint and draw. She took art classes in Phoenix, in Colorado, and at Graceland University in Lamoni. She had several of her art pieces in juried art shows. She was a member of the Community of Christ Church. She enjoyed working with the youth in her early adult life.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Lawrence Nelms; sisters, Mary McClellan and Flora Agnew; and brother, Bert Hamby.

Survivors include her daughters, Angie Fox of Ames, Iowa, Paula Sandlin of Ames, and Betty Nelms of Mount Ayr, Iowa; five grandchildren, Steven & Jennifer Sandlin, Adam Sandlin, Russell & Terri Nelms, Timothy & Kathy Fox, and Tara Fox; five great grandchildren, Jackson, Emma, Eavy, Nicholas, and Jared; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Lamoni Community of Christ in Lamoni, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, 2018, with Evangelist Les Gardner officiating. Visitation is 9:30-10:30 a.m. on Monday at the church. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home.
