Deborah Ann Dorn, age 54, of Lamoni, Iowa was the daughter of William Lee Howell and Joyce Eloise (Karns) Howell. She was born April 5, 1963, in Des Moines, Iowa. She died on January 4, 2018, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

Deb grew up in Des Moines and attended Lincoln High School. Her first job was carrying papers for the Des Moines Register. While in high school she learned sign language. She was a junior police officer and volunteered at Lutheran Hospital as a candy striper and at the Braille Institute for the Blind. She took dance, gymnastics, and modeling classes. She attended beauty school and earned her associate’s degree in criminal justice. Deb sold cosmetics and loved doing makeup on people. She was a gourmet cook and loved to share what she made with others. She also enjoyed gardening.

Deb was a dedicated Casey’s General Store employee in Lamoni for over nine years. She was a loving person who could always tell when someone needed hug or a shoulder to cry on. She was also bipolar and worked hard to educate people how that effected herself and others. She was adventurous and not afraid of much of anything. She was a member of the Christian Church. She was totally accepting of others and could fit in at any church she walked into. She was always doing more for others than for herself. She took guardianship of her grandson, Brodie, when he was two years old. He lived with her until he was nine and her health was failing.

Preceding her in death were her father, William Howell and stepfather, Thomas J. Manning.

Survivors include her mother, Joyce Manning of Leon, Iowa; grandson, Brodie Garbart of Leon; daughter, Savannah DeVaine of Lamoni; sisters, Teresa Howell of Olathe, Kansas and Patricia Staples of Gillette, Wyoming; a niece and a nephew; dear friend, Billy Weable of Lamoni; and other relatives and friends.

No services are planned at this time. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa.
