John Lewis Brown
July 19, 1847 ~ June 18, 1929

Leon Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

John Lewis Brown was born in Indiana and was at the time of his death 81 years, 10 month and 29 days. He was united in marriage to Susan Akes September 14, 1981. To this union four children were born, Anna Akers of Denver, Colorado; Bertha Reuss and Lou Williams of Decatur Iowa; W.P. preceded him to the great beyond leaving a son (Forrest) who was taken by the grandparents and raised as their very own.

He leaves to mourn his untimely departure a wife three daughters, two sisters, Rhoda Detrick, of New Plymouth, Idaho; Eliza Springsteen, of Decatur, Iowa; and a half brother Harrison Brown of New Plymouth Idaho, beside a host of other relatives and friends.

He was converted when quite young and continued in the faith until death. He was member of the I.O.O.F. for fifty years. He was in failing health for the past two years, but a week prior to his death he was stricken with paralysis and never regained consciousness, but quietly passed away at his home in Decatur, Iowa, June 18 1929. All was done that loving hands could do but to no avail.

Uncle Lew as he was commonly known made his friends by his acquaintance. He was loved and respected by all that knew him.

The funeral services were held at his home in Decatur Iowa, Jun 20 1920 at 2:30 p.m. conducted by his nephew Rev. Geo T. Roberts of Corning, Iowa. The music was furnished by Mrs. Frank E. Young at the piano and the quartet consisted of Mrs. Ruby Black, Mrs. Dr. Rogers, Jay Alexander and Lewis Andrew. The songs were "Bury Me Near the Old Home", "Asleep in Jesus", and "Whispering Hope," which were beautifully rendered. His body was quietly laid to rest beside his son in Decatur cemetery.

Taken from the Scrapbook of Ethel Umphress received from Irene Umphress in 1991.
