Narcissa (Gaston) Brockway
February 15, 1830 ~ March 23, 1913

Narcissa Gaston was born in Columbia (sic) county, Ohio, Feb. 15, 1830 and died at her home in Decatur county, Iowa, March 23, 1913. She came with her brother to Iowa in 1876, and two years later was married to Albert Brockway, Nov. 5, 1878 [Chariton, Iowa]. Mr. Brockway died Nov. 26, 1894. Mrs. Brockway was neighborly, kind and solicitous about friends and the sick; and the writer never heard her say a harmful word about anyone. Although she had no children of her own she was always interested in children.

Mrs. Brockway was converted and joined the Presbyterian church when a young woman, and after coming to Decatur she united with the Methodist church. A poet wrote: "We live in deeds not words; in thoughts, not breaths; in in feelings, not in figures on a dial." We should count time by heart throbs, when they beat for God, for man, and for duty. He lives most who thinks most, feels noblest and acts the best.

Mrs. Brockway leaves two sister and two brothers -- Mrs. John Geeting of Decatur, Mrs. Elizabeth Lyon of Oregon, Mr. Hugh Gaston of Tama county, Iowa, and Mrs. Philander Gaston of Ohio. Everything was done that loving hands could do for her in her last hours. She had with her her step-daughter, Mrs. A. O. Bullock, of St. Joe, and her niece, Mrs. Elizabeth Crofford, of Ohio.

[Interment was made at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, Iowa.]
