Neal Meredith Akes, 54, died July 14, 2004, at West Park Hospital with his wife and many friends by his side after a valiant battle against cancer.

He was born March 4, 1950.

He was proud to have served his country in the Army and of being a Vietnam veteran. He was also a 20-year employee of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center's maintenance department. He loved riding his motorcycle and was a founding member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association Wyoming Chapter F.

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was a quiet, easy going man with a sly sense of humor and a love of practical jokes. He was a man you could depend upon, and he will be sorely missed.

He is survived by his wife Cindy, daughter May (Ben) and children Michael and Jade of St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, son Brian (Shari) and children Brooke, Colton, Hunter and Dustan of Chariton, Iowa, son Thomas Russell of Carroll, Iowa, sisters Loretta Kelly and Betty Wilcox of Leon, Iowa, and Rosetta (Ronald) Barker of Coon Rapids, Iowa, nieces, nephews and a host of other family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Edna Mills of Decatur, Iowa, and father Harley Akes of Garden Grove, Iowa.

A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the BBHC's Robbie Powwow Garden. At a later date, a memorial service and interment will be at the Decatur cemetery.
