Leon, Decatur County, IowaRobert L. "Bob" Spidle, 85, died of cancer on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.
Bob was born on April 4, 1925 to Carl Melvin and Hilda (Phipps) Spidle in Garden Grove, Iowa. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Bob received his B.A. degree from Simpson College and his M.A. degree from what is now Truman State University. He worked in education for 38 years, teaching, coaching and counseling, with the last 20 years being at Valley High School, retiring in 1988. Bob truly enjoyed working with young people.
He was a member of the West Des Moines United Methodist Church and a charter member of West Des Moines Elks Lodge #2752.
Bob will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie Spidle; four daughters, Jane (Kevin) Pratt, Linda (Nick) King, Marlys Malone and Carol Clark; one son, Robert J. "Jim" (Dixie) Spidle; six grandchildren; six great-grandhildren; and a host of numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Leo, Joe, Cecil and Albert; two sisters, Eda and Betty and his first wife, Lela.
Memorial contributions may be made to either: Mercy Hospice in Johnston or West Des Moines Elks Lodge #2752.
Funeral service was held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 18, 2010 at Westover Funeral Home, Des Moines, Iowa, with the Reverend John Augspurger officiating. Musical selections were "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art". Interment will be made at a later date at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
