Doyle Lee Martin, age 86, of rural Leon, Iowa, was born May 14, 1931, to Oscar Guy and Mary Ann (Hill) Martin in Leon, Iowa. He passed away at his home on Thursday, November 9, 2017.

Doyle moved to the country when he was 14 years old. He went to school in Leon. When he was a young man he enjoyed playing pool and snooker, which he was pretty good at. He worked with his dad and brothers shoveling coal and shucking corn. Later, he and his brother, Don, bought a straight truck and hauled whatever they could.

Doyle bought his current farm at age 27, starting with eight cows. This is when he met the love of his life, Phyllis Jean Smith, at a café in Indianola, Iowa. He said, “She was the prettiest thing you ever seen. I loved her at the first sight.” They were married October 13, 1955, in Leon, where they have been inseparable ever since. They were blessed with two daughters, Terri Lynn and Debbie Jo.

Doyle and Phyllis built their house themselves making it a loving home. Doyle raised hogs and cattle and still had cattle. He and his brother, Don, did carpentry work for several years. He also worked in Des Moines, Iowa for C Cap building part of Mercy Hospital. He did custom baling for almost everyone in the neighborhood for several years.

Doyle loved his coonhound dogs and horses, having so many through the years. Doyle enjoyed coon hunting with his brother, Darrell. He also enjoyed deer and turkey hunting with his grandsons, Lyle and Garry Potter. He was so excited this year to go turkey hunting with Garry and get his last turkey. He and Phyllis enjoyed traveling every state, except three. In later years they just loved to go for car rides. Doyle loved his family and family gatherings. He never wanted them to leave as he followed them to their vehicles, still talking. Doyle had a great sense of humor, not to be out witted by his brothers.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, Don and Billie Martin and Darrell and Lue Martin; brothers-in-law, Harvey Smith and wife, Betty, and Raymond Smith; father-in-law, Harry Smith; mother-in-law, Irene Schmidt and husband, Fred; niece, Peggy Smith; nephew, Monty Martin; son-in-law, Gene Naylor; and step grandson, Alex Naylor.
