Vernon Milton Hitz, age 70, of rural Weldon, Iowa, died December 10, 2017, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born January 27, 1947, in Highland, Illinois to Milton and Irene (Trost) Hitz.

In his youth, Vernon enjoyed basketball, cross-country, baseball, softball, bowling, 4-H, and FFA. He graduated in 1965, from Triad High School in St. Jacob, Illinois. He married Katherine Frick on April 4, 1970, in Highland, Illinois. They raised their four children on the family farm where Vernon had a dairy operation. Vernon and Kathy retired to Decatur County in south central Iowa in 1999. Vernon enjoyed living a quiet country life playing games and spending time with his family. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Eugene Frick; mother-in-law, Mary Frick; and his brothers-in-law, Keith Bergstrom and Chris Frick.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Hitz of Weldon, Iowa; his children, Andrew and Jodi Hitz of Creston, Iowa, Jennifer and Steve Klostermann of Breese, Illinois, Julie Hitz-Katz and Demian Katz of North Wales, Pennsylvania, and Jodie and Andrew Nehrt of Edwardsville, Illinois; grandchildren, Jacob, Levi, and Wyatt Hitz, Elizabeth and Anna Klostermann, Otto Katz, and Henry Nehrt; sister, Maureen Bergstrom of Edwardsville; sister-in-law, Mary Horton of Highland; niece, Kara Miriani and husband, Jason, of House Springs, Missouri; and nephew, Jami Weiss and wife, Eva, of Granite City, Illinois; and other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2017, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leon, Iowa with Pastor J.R. Wheeler officiating. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa. [Interment was made at Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.]

Memorials may be given to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation or Lutheran Hour Ministries.
