October 30, 1931 ~ June 22, 2017Joan Isabelle McConnell Kelley was born October 30, 1931 in Grand River, IA and was the daughter of the late Jap D. McConnell and Lois Dukes McConnell. She was raised by Gladys Dukes McConnell after the death of her mother. She was baptized in the Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by two siblings - Bobbie (Clyde) Swineheart and Keith(Alice) McConnell.
At the tender age of fifteen, Joan married the late James Wilkey of Valescia, IA and had four children with him - David (deceased in 2004), Robert, Lenney and Randall. They later divorced. She married Edward Kelley in 1960 and they resided in Sherman Oaks, CA where they both worked in law enforcement. When Ed retired in 1973, they moved to Lake Havasu, AZ. They did a lot of traveling until Ed got sick in 1977 and later passed away in 1978. After his passing, she moved to Show Low AZ. She then drove for Bob – an 18-wheeler Peterbilt long nose for six years, all 48 states and Canada.
Joan spent the last eight years of her life between Arizona with Lenney, North Carolina with Randy and Florida with Bob.
Joan passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017 in Lumberton, NC.
She is survived by her sons, Robert (Mary) Wilkey, Randall (Jewell) Wilkey and her daughter, Lenney Martinez. Other survivors include her granddaughters, JoEllen (Donald Purbaugh, Jr.) Wilkey, Jennifer (Kenneth) Moorehead, Susan (Tammy) Mina, Joanne (Hermann) Usma, Ana Maria Mejia (fiancé Joey Reyna), Angela Lewis; grandson David Mina; great-granddaughters Emily Moorehead, Jessica Moorehead, Rosalyn Purbaugh, Kaitlyn Mina, Julianna (Melissa Febo) Rivas, Sophia Grace Usma, Mariah Lewis, Jewell Lewis, Erica (Luis) Poveda, Stefani (Kyler) McComic; great-grandsons Austin Rivas, Tyler Usma, Donnie Purbaugh, Nate Purbaugh, Dylan Mina; great-great-granddaughter, Aliyana Poveda. Also surviving are her two step-sons, Michael Kelley and Dennis Kelley. She is also survived by Jack (Nancy) McConnell plus many other relatives including nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services were held graveside on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Inglewood Cemetery, Inglewood CA. Family members officiated.
