Harry Nash Jones, 81, passed away early Wednesday afternoon, March 30, 2011, at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Waukee, at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 2, with interment following at the Waukee Cemetery.

Harry was born August 20, 1929, to George C. and Vera (Nash) Jones Sr. in Van Meter, IA. He received his early education in the Van Meter and later moved into the Waukee School District, graduating in 1947. Harry attended Northwest Missouri State University until his induction into the U.S. Army in September of 1951. He served until August 1953.

Harry married LaVerne Hodson, February 1952, and this union produced their children: Kathleen, Jeff, and Kristie. He retired in 1997 after 30 years of service with the Street and Maintenance Department of the City of Waukee. A local Boy Scout leader for several years, he also served as chauffeur for his wife's Girl Scout troop on annual summer treks throughout the US. Harry was an avid gardener, carpenter, tinkerer, camper and loved sports.

Harry was preceded in death by: his parents, a daughter, Kathleen, three brothers, Vinson, Russell and George Jr.; and a sister, Catherine Reed.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, LaVerne, son Jeff of Waukee, daughter Kristie (Neil) Dierks of Clive, three granddaughters Mackenzie, Madison, and Meredith Dierks; his sister, Charlotte Swallow of Waukee, and many relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Waukee Christian Church from 5 to 7p.m. Friday, April 1. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be directed later.
