Great Grandparents

JURGEN CLAUSEN, GEORGE HUGG

I am working on a narrative of my family's history which goes through my great grandparents listed above. Jurgen Clausen immigrated from Schleswig Holstein and moved to Washington Township in 1891 and George Hugg immigrated from Upper Alsace in 1865 and moved to Washington Township sometime after 1871. I have found their plats on the northeast corner of the 1908 Washington Twp map. I'd like to know, might have acquired their land by the Homestead Act or was Iowa too settled for that? How would they have travelled from the east coast or Chicago - by train? Where would they most likely have crossed the Mississippi River?
