Caroline Belmont Kitchen was born Jan. 15, 1822, in Columbia county, Pennsylvania, and was married Sept. 19, 1839, to Samuel Craft. Thirty years later, In 1869, they left Pennsylvania to make their home in DeKalb county, Illinois. Then in 1881 they came to lowa, settling on a farm in Willow township of this county.

Mr. and Mrs. Craft were the parents of eleven children, eight of whom are left to mourn her loss: Mrs. Hattie Swanson and Robert Craft, of this city; John Craft, of Zearing; Tom Craft, of Dunlap; Mrs. Lina Underhill, of Omaha; Lloyd Craft, residing in Illinois; Mrs. Rose Brown, a resident of Colorado, and Mrs. Sarah Joycox, of Kansas. She also leaves twenty-nine grandchildren, two of her grandsons, Ira Craft and Clyde Underhill, and one great grandson, Arthur Baker, being with the United States army in France.

Since the death of her husband in 1887 Mrs. Craft has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Daniel Swanson, in this city.

Early in life the subject of this sketch became a christian and became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She was a woman of high ideals and held the respect and esteem of a large circle of friends. She was an ideal wife and mother and a helpful neighbor in her community. Her trust in her Savior was a great comfort to her in her declining years and the bible her constant companion, her favorite chapter being the 14th chapter of John, "In our father's house are many mansions."

Funeral services were held at the Daniel Swanson home Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. Craig, of Bloomington, Ill., officiating, after which interment was made in the lot in the Willow township cemetery.
