Funeral services were held Friday, October 9 for John Ehlers from the Methodist Church at 2 PM. Rev. Richard Rowe officiated and songs "Abide With Me" and "No Night There" were sung by Mrs. Downey and Mrs. Pace accompanied by Anna Brown at the piano.
Pallbearers were Paul Robertson, Arnold Gallagher, Ralph Kroll, Louis Finnegan, Earl Hickey and William Bargenquast. Burial was made in the Nishnabotna Cemtery.
John Ehlers was born in Schleswig, Germany June 6, 1871 and died at a rest home in Denison, October 7 at the age of 82 years, 4 months and 1 day.
When 17, he left Germany and moved to Arcadia, where for some years he worked as a farm hand.
October 1, 1897, he married Josephine Krauel and five children were born to this union: William of Denison, Herman of Des Moines, Mrs. Lillie Olson, Mrs. Ida Lahndorf and Mrs. Marie Terwilliger of Manilla.
Soon after their marriage, they rented a farm and 15 years later, in 1914, they sold out and moved to Manilla. He lived here until his illness resulting from a broken hip and complications caused him to be removed to a hospital.
Survivors include his widow, two sons, three daughters, nine grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a sister, Mrs. Maria Plahn of manning and a number of nephews and nieces and other friends.
