John C. “Tripper” Carey, III, left us way too soon, just three days after his 30th birthday on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Every time he entered a room, it seemed that his smile entered first! Heaven is a bit brighter today. A family gathering will be held privately to honor his life.

Family was important and Tripper grew up with his brother Jacob close by his side, sharing many memories swimming in the Mississippi and in the pool at home. He is a 2010 graduate of West Carroll High School, lettering in three sports each year, football, wrestling and baseball.

After high school Tripper set-out to travel and find his place. He visited Las Vegas, Colorado, worked on a Salmon fishing boat in Alaska and drove a truck in the oil fields of North Dakota. The past several years, Tripper worked in several car dealerships from Georgia, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Illinois and for the last year he worked with his father in Savanna at JC Carey Motors. Wherever Tripper went he made friends easily and always looked forward to returning home to be with family, especially his Grandma Ruth.

He was a member of the Savanna Volunteer Fire Department, coached Jr. High Football for West Carroll, and instructed swimming lessons in Savanna and Mt. Carroll. He loved to tell stories, loved having family and friends around, just golfing or sitting around the bonfire. His life was full of ups and downs, but whatever life threw at Tripper, he would overcome and make the best. He would say, “I am who I am, and that’s all that I am, I’m Tripper Carey.”

Tripper will be dearly missed by his Dad and Mom, JC and Beth Carey of Savanna, his brother, Jacob and Kaylee (Plattenberger) Carey of Montana; Aunts, Jo and Brenda (Feller) Carey, Melody (Scott) Kelly and Kim (Tim) Manthe; Uncle Keith Stage; Grandparents Frank and Mary Stage of Geneseo; and numerous cousins. He is also survived by his mother, Debra Mills of Potomac, Illinois. Tripper is preceded in death by his grandparents Jack and Ruth Carey.
