Mr. Clare L. Hodson, 86, of DeWitt, Iowa, died early Tuesday morning, January 7, 2014, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt.

Clare Luvern Hodson was born October 14, 1927 in Artesian, South Dakota, to Andy and Vera (Galitz) Hodson. At 17 years, Clare enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was stationed on the USS Iowa and Wisconsin battleships. Upon honorable discharge from service, Clare married the former Ruth Elaine Connole at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, on May 23, 1953. Clare was an electrician and cattle farmer for many years. He retired from DeWitt Electric in 1989 and continued farming. His wife Ruth preceded him in death on February 10, 2005.

He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, and the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 of DeWitt. Clare was a former volunteer fireman, leader of the DeWitt Hustler's 4-H Club, Clinton County Cattleman member and a lifetime member of the Iowa Angus Association. His hobbies included welding and woodworking.

Surviving are children, Annette Henderson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Michael (Nancy) Hodson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Cynthia (Marla King) Hodson of Cedar Rapids and Maureen (Bill) Henry of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren, Lisa (Scott) Locker, Erin Henderson, Dana (fiancé, Adam Burger) Henderson, Sean Henderson, Claire Hodson, Joseph Hodson, Billy Henry and Patrick Henry; great-grandchildren, Reis Savage and Hadlee Locker; sisters, Lila Stewart of DeWitt and Lola (Charlie) Schneckloth of Preston, Iowa; nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, Clare was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 9, 2014, with a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 10, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Fr. Paul Connolly officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Sean Henderson, Joseph Hodson, Billy Henry, Patrick Henry, Scott Locker and Adam Burger. Honorary pallbearer will be Reis Savage.
