Eli Lanning, one of the oldest and best known residents of Clinton, was found dead in bed Saturday morning. Friday night he retired as usual and apparently passed away while asleep. For over a year he had been in failing health. Death is attributed to an affection of the heart.
He was born Sept. 16, 1834 in Blairstown, N. J. He came to Iowa settling in Camanche in 1852. He moved to Clinton in 1871 employed by Curtis Bros. as shipping clerk ever since. He leaves two sons, Charles of this city and Harry of Pumroy, Wash., who has been in the city some time. He leaves a brother in Los Angeles, Cal., and a sister in Newton, Iowa. The deceased was a Mason.
The funeral was held at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon with interment at Oakland cemetery.
