Newspaper unknown, possibly the Des Moines Tribune:
Civil War Veteran Dead
CLINTON, IA -- Thomas C. Bartow, 94, Clinton's last member of the G.A.R., died Sunday night.
Mr. Bartow was born in Pennsylvania. He enlisted for service in the war at the age of 15, on Jan. 18, 1861, in the Pennsylvania infantry and was honorably discharged July 30. Aug. 5, 1862, he re-enlisted in Co. F of the 125th Pennsylvania infantry from which he was honorably discharged May 18, 1863.
The third time he enlisted he was assigned to Co. M of the 20th Pennsylvania cavalry on July 25, 1863. His discharge is dated Oct. 3, 1863. His re-enlistment Dec. 30 that year engaged him with Battery E of the Third Pennsylvania heavy artillery but four months later he was transferred to Co. F of the 188th regiment of Pennsylvania infantry.
When the war was over he was mustered out with honorable discharge dated Dec. 14, 1865.
In the periods of service Mr. Bartow saw action in the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Yorktown, Hatch's Run, Spottslvania, Chancellorsville, White House Landing, Fair Oaks, Cold Harbor and the Surrender of Richmond. His civil war service makes him the proud possessor of four army discharges and one transfer. He was never wounded in battle, but spent some time in prison camps.
Mr. Bartow was married three times and three times death severed the companionships. Three sons, all by his first wife, are Clarence Bartow of Texarkana, Ark.; Edward of Ames, Ia., and Alonzo of Marion, Ind.
Gen. N. B. (line cut off but probably says Baker GAR of Clinton), which boasted 450 members when it was instituted in 1882, has been known for the last 10 years as a one-man post because of the activity of Thomas C. Bartow, who was a charter member and who never relinquished his loyalty and service. When his comrades were gone or unable to attend, he filled as many offices as he could. The remainder of the chairs were filled by women of the auxiliary.
The last 10 years he had been the commander.
