Vaneta Marie Griebel was born November 15, 1930, in Bellevue, Iowa to Harold and Louella (Huenke) Griebel. She graduated from the Bellevue school system. She married Kenneth L. Taplin on January 2, 1949. They would later divorce. Vaneta was a homemaker and partnered with Kenneth on the farm. Vaneta enjoyed traveling all over the world. She most enjoyed visiting the Holy Land. Vaneta was told by her physician, the best exercise was to walk… and walk she did. No matter the weather, she was so dedicated to this that members of the Miles community would become concerned if they did not see her out and about.
In August of 2017 when Vaneta’s health began to fail, she moved to the Alverno in Clinton. She loved her quilting circle at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, many area senior citizen events, and was devoted to her church, Calvary Lutheran in Sabula. She enjoyed word puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, reading, playing cards, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She was so proud of her children whom she proclaimed to be “workaholics”.
Vaneta is survived by her 5 children: Ruth (Randy Hill) Caven of Clinton, Barbara (Larry) Hopson of Erie, Illinois, Steven (Julie Burken) Taplin of Clinton, Karen (Kenneth) Rogis of Clinton and David (Jeannie) Taplin of Preston, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 great-grandson to be born in April.
A special thank you to Pastor Barbara Hayden for helping us through difficult decisions, Dr. Barakat, The Alverno, and the nursing staff at Mercy Critical Care Unit.
