From the Linn County Register of Marion, Iowa Thursday November 6, 1862; Clinton County Items:
Mr. Thomas Drury, of Deep Creek township, in this county, met a dreadful death last Tuesday, Oct. 28th. He was grinding sugar cane, and while in the act of oiling the mill, his foot slipped, and before he could recover his balance, the sweep in its revolution struck him in the back of the head, catching him against the iron frame of the mill, and crushed his skull in a most shocking manner. Medical assistance was obtained as soon as possible, but it was of no avail. Large pieces of bone were taken from the brain, into which they had been driven and it was only strange that he lived a moment after the accident. He ceased breathing six hours after receiving the injury, being wholly unconscious the while.
Mr. Drury was universally esteemed as an honest man and a good neighbor by all that knew him. He leaves a wife and three children. The sympathy of the entire community is with the bereaved family.
