John S. Craig, son of Wm. and Martha (Hiles) Craig, was born in Ohio, Dec. 14, 1836.

In 1854 the Craig family, Mr. and Mrs. Craig, three sons, John, Wesley and Cyrus, and one daughter, Elizabeth, came to Clayton County, Iowa, settling on a piece of land south of Millville, where they lived many years.

In 1862 John Craig was united in marriage to Caroline Griffith, to whom were born three daughters, Savilla Best, Minerva Fitch and Arial Long, all of whom are living; one son, Adrian, died a year ago.

In August 1862 he enlisted in company G., 21st Iowa at Dubuque and was mustered in as second Lieutenant.

In May 1863 he was promoted to first Lieutenant and July 23, 1863 he was made Captain. He saw service at Port Gibson, Champion's Hill, Black River Bridge, Vicksburg, Siege of Spanish Hill, Blakel and Mobile.

He was a member of the 13th Corp of Grant's army at Vicksburg and was later transferred to a Texas division. As a soldier, Captain Craig established an honorable record and received his discharge at the close of the war July 16, 1865.

Deceased passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. P. Fitch, in Norfolk, Nebr., July 18, and was laid to rest in a country cemetery near that town beside his wife, who died several years ago.
