August Koehn, one of the old time residents of this community, passed away suddenly Saturday morning, September 24, at his home in Elkader. Mr. Koehn was in apparent good health when he arose Saturday morning and after partaking of breakfast went out into the yard to attend to a few chores. Shortly afterwards his wife went out to call him and receiving no answer investigated and found him lying on the ground, dead.

The deceased was born on the 12th day of November, 1860, in Behrendorf, Werben, Germany. In the year 1891, on January 28th, he was united in marriage to Miss Krueger. Ten children were born to this union, three sons preceding him in death. In the year 1894, on April 18th, they came to America and settled in Clayton Center where they remained for ten years. In the year 1904 they moved on the farm near Communia where they resided for 23 years. Four years ago they came to their Elkader home to retire from active work.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and the following children: Mrs. Otto Beyer of Clayton Center, Robert Koehn of Communia, Mrs. John Maehl of Elkader, Wm. Koehn of Communia, Mrs. R. Harnack of Elkader, Mrs. Edwin Osthoff of Clayton, and Miss ________ at Home; also a brother, Ferdinand Koehn of Garnavillo, 25 grandchildren and a host of friends. The deceased reached the age of 71 years, ten months and 12 days.

Funeral services were held at the late home Monday afternoon at 1:30 and in the Evangelical church here at 2:00 p.m. Interment was made in the East Side cemetery, the Rev. P. Kitterer officiating.
