Died at his home in Boardman Township, Thursday, September 19th, 1878, at 1 o’clock a.m. of Typhoid fever, Granville Cook aged 23 years, 9 months and 3 days.

Granville Cook, son of A.D. Cook, was born near Elkader, in 1854 and has passed his boyhood and manhood days amongst us, with the exception of a two years’ absence during the Black Hills gold excitement. During this absence through exposure he contracted disease and though a stout, rugged young man, he never wholly recovered from its effects.

Granville was one of the most industrious, hardworking young men we have ever known, and was engaged in carrying on his father’s farm this year. His death is a sad loss to the family and they have the sympathy of the entire community in their affliction.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Chas. Cressy a large concourse of citizen being present and following the remains to their last resting place. May he rest in peace.

Elkader Register: September 26, 1878

Note: WPA records give burial in East Side cemetery, Elkader. Given name is spelled variously Greenville, Granville & other similar.
