It becomes my painful duty to chronicle the death of an aged veteran of this town, Mr. John Herman Mohrman, who died July 26th, at the advanced age of 91 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He was the father of J.H. and J.C. Mohrman, well and favorable known in this county, (now of Nebraska) and Mrs. B.F. Schroder and Mrs. J.H. Kuentzel of this places, ladies esteemed and respected by all who know them.

He leaves a wife and four children, who reside in this place.

The bereaved friends have the sympathy of the community.

Mr. Mohrman was born in the Kingdom of Hanover, March 10th, 1787, came to America in 1832 and settled in Ohio, which place he left in 1849, for a home in Clayton county, where he has since resided, the most of the time in Garnavillo.

He was twice married, the last time at the age of 71, and of his descendants now living there are 9 children, 33 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren, while many have preceded him to the better land.

He served as a soldier in Germany, and was in the battle of Liepsig, which occurred in October, 1813, and had the honor of fighting against the great Napoleon in the battle, which resulted in victory for the Germans and their emancipation from the French yoke.

His living to so a great an age, may be in a measure attributed to his fugal and temperate habits. He was universally respected, and his loss will be felt, but no one can mourn, that “Grandpa Mohrman” has at last “Gone Home.”
