LETTER FROM GUTTENBERG PEOPLE IN CALIFORNIA
_______

DR. AND MRS. DUFFIN, MR. AND MRS. SCHOLZ MEET MANY CLAYTON CO. PEOPLE
_______

Dr. and Mrs. C. W. Duffin and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Scholz, who are spending the winter in California, write the Guttenberg Press the following letter under date of February 23, 1929:

Santa Ana, Calif., Feb. 23, 1929
Guttenberg Press, Guttenberg, Iowa,

Beginning with Feb. 28th Issue will you please change both our “Press” addresses to Winona Apts., 497 Winona Ave., Pasadena, California, which will be our home until we start for Iowa, May 1st.

We just returned from Lincoln park in Los Angeles, where we attended the Annual Iowa Picnic. Do not know how many were there, but a rough estimate was over 50,000. Will not know actual registration until tomorrow or Monday. The day was beautiful and we ate our picnic dinner in the park.

We spent almost our entire time at the Clayton County registration desk, while hundreds registered as natives of Clayton county, some who left Iowa many years ago. We will give below only the names of those whom we visited with and who are known well in Guttenberg and vicinity: Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Tiede, Mrs. Tiede was known in Guttenberg as a girl as Josie Weiner, and she has shown us many favors while here. John Bush and wife, formerly of Osterdock, John Horsch, a cousin of the deceased Horsch boys, of Guttenberg, Cora Grinter Stevenson, a daughter of the former Dr. Grinter, of Guttenberg and Glen Haven, Wisconsin; Mrs. M. A. Creglow and her daughter, Stella Beeman and husband; Mrs. W. D. Baker, a sister of Louis Havill, of Guttenberg; A. W. Lewis, a brother of former Attorney W. C. Lewis; Ed. Beck, formerly of Elkport; Martin Hagensick, of Elkader; Frank W. Eaton, of Postville, formerly telephone trouble man at Guttenberg; Herman Mueller and wife, of Elkader; Ray Egbert, of Monona; Julia Grether, class-mate of Julia Friedlein-Finch at Iowa State Teachers’ College, Cedar Falls, who visited in Guttenberg several times; Stella Russell, of Monona, former Clayton County teacher, who said she taught during entire terms of C. J. Adam as county superintendent of schools; M. H. Clark, of McGregor, former Dubuque Division C., M. & St. P. conductor; Chas. Flagg, former Turkey River Branch Mail Clerk.

The last two above named wanted to know why we did not bring Charley Petters [station agent at Guttenberg at the time] along with us and get him thawed out.

James Cleveland, painter, of McGregor, who worked in Guttenberg and a brother of Austin Cleveland; V. R. Bush, of McGregor; Mrs. H. H. Barnard, of Elkader; Geo. Dexter and wife of Strawberry Point; W. C. McNiel, of Postville; John Merkle, formerly of Guttenberg and North Buena Vista; Chas. Stiehl, of National, cousin of John Stiehl, of Garnavillo; F. W. Schoellerman, formerly of Garnavillo, and others whose names we missed.

Yours Truly,
Dr. and Mrs. C. W. Duffin
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. E. Scholz
