Robert James Mingus, the son of Robert and Mary Crippen Mingus, was born March 24, 1925 in Bagley, Iowa. His childhood years were spent in Bagley where he received his early education. He later attended school in Council Bluffs, where he graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School.

Robert entered the military in 1943, serving with the Army Air Corps during WWII. While in the service, he married Willa Belle Jimison on November 3, 1944, in Denver, Colorado. To this union four children were born. Following Robert's discharge in 1946, they moved to Bagley, Iowa, where they lived for four years before moving to Council Bluffs. In 1967, they moved to Spencer and in 1973 to Gillett Grove.

Following his wife's death, Robert married Dorothy Marie Stone on December 16, 1977, in Pocahontas, Iowa. Throughout their marriage they made their home in the Dickens community. Dorothy passed away on September 7, 1989.

In addition to farming for 10 years, Robert worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, including twelve years as Postmaster. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gillett Grove and the American Legion.

Mr. Mingus passed away at the Spencer Hospital on July 9, 1998, at the age of 73. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Willa Belle in 1977 and his wife Dorothy in 1989.

Robert is survived by three daughters: Gayla Johnson, and her husband Jim of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Joanne Murray, and her husband Jeff, of Lincoln, Nebraska and Laura Huffman of Grover Beach, California; one son and his wife, Jim and Diana Mingus of Spencer, Iowa; a special friend, Opal Rheam of Dickens; 11 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; one sister, Betty Shea of Downers Grove, Illinois; one niece, Jennifer Hellman of Downers Grove, Illinois; other relatives and many friends.
