Memorial Rites at Murray for Drowning Victim
MURRAY — A memorial service for Gene LaVern Garrison, 31, formerly of Murray, will be held at the Murray Church of Christ at 2 p.m. Sunday. Rev. Walter Williams will conduct the service. Garrison drowned in the Iowa River, near Coralviile, the evening of July 2. He and his wife and another couple were boating on the river. Garrison, who was an expert swimmer, tried to swim to shore when the motor on the boat failed. He had swum only a few feet when he called for help and went down.
He was buried in the Murray cemetery after graveside services at 8 p.m., on July 6. Garrison was born March 23, 1935, at Iowa City, the son of John and Cleo Kane Garrison. He grew up in Murray and received his education in the Murray community schools. He was married Nov. 1, 1958, at Osceola, to Florence Soper. He is survived by has widow; two sons, Gene and Bradley, of Chariton; his mother, Mrs. Cleo Garrison of Murray; and two brothers, John of Trenton, Mo., and Marvin of Kiowa, Kan. He was a construction worker and had been employed in Cedar Rapids for the past two years.
