TRAGIC DEATH OF HUGH DUKE

Deaf Veteran Struck by train at Q
Depot Monday—Body Horribly Mangled.

About ten o'clock Monday Morning Hugh Duke was struck and instantly killed by a switching freight in front of the Q depot. Mr. Duke was attempting to cross the north track when the train backed upon him, six cars and the engine passing over his body which was so mangled as to scarcely recognizable.

The terrible accident happened in full view of a number of people—men principally—who tried to warn him of his danger but as he was totally deaf their efforts failed. It is supposed he had come to meet people from Woodburn coming in on No. 3 at 10:20.

The coroner was notified and took charge of the body and friends notified absent members of the family. It was a terrible shock to the community. Mr. Duke was known thruout the county and every one liked him. The funeral services were held in the M. E. church at Woodburn Tuesday morning in charge of Rev. Durant and interment made by the side of his wife in the family lot in Woodburn cemetery.

Hugh R. Duke, was born in Clarke county, Virginia, November 28, 1836. In his youth he came with his parents to Logan county, Ohio, and later Washington, Iowa. At the age of twenty-four he enlisted in the service of this country, member of Co. K 7th Iowa Vol. serving all thru the war.

In June 13, 1867, he was married to Mary C. Frush. They came to a farm in Jackson township in 1880 and later left the farm for a home in Woodburn. Early in the spring of 1912 he came with his invalid wife to make his home with his son, C. O. Duke, in Osceola. Here his wife died March 27. Three sons and a daughter survive: Mrs. Frank Johnson, St. Charles; Orin D., Abingdon, Ill.; Elmer E. living south of Osceola and Clyde of this city. All were present at the funeral excepting Orin D., who was prevented by sickness.

Mr. Duke was a lifelong member of the M. E. church; he was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and of the GAR. He was a good citizen, devoted husband and father and kind friend.
