Everett Van Mateer, son of Pearl Dew Babbitt and Arthur Newton Mateer, was born May 30, 1916, in Pottawattamie County and died July 4, 1995 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was 79.

Mr. Mateer attended school in Clarke County. He married Mary Lucille Hays on March 21, 1936. The couple were parents of five children, Doris Marie, Everett Leroy, Joyce Lorraine and twins, Jean Darlene and Lewis Eugene.

Mr. Mateer began farming as a young man with brothers on their father’s farm. Other jobs throughout his life have included helping to clear the way for Highway 69 using mules, hauling coal from the coal mines and cutting wood. He always came back to farming as a row crop farmer, dairy farmer and custom farmer for others. These vocations led to his career as a John Deere Implement Dealer. His welding skill and ability to fix any hay baler were renowned throughout the county and state.

One of his most precious legacies for future generations is a stand of more than 100 walnut trees he planted.

Everett’s biggest joy was his family. His CB handle was “Grandpa” given him by his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Gladys Mateer in infancy, son, “Bob,” grandsons, Shawn and Steven, great granddaughter, Renee Nicole, brothers, Dale Allen, Clayton, Gene and Earl, sisters-in-law, Alta, Almarine and Ruth, and brother-in-law, Hubert Page.

Mr. Mateer is survived by his wife Mary, four children, Doris Mongar and friend John Hinebaugh, Joyce Muselman and friend Dennis Hardy, Darlene Massey and husband Leo, Lewis Mateer; and daughter-in-law Peggy Mateer; 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren, four great-stepgrandchildren, sister Ruth Page, sister-in-law, Juanita Mateer along with other relatives and many friends.
