Mrs. G. L. Ashby

Funeral services for Mrs. G. L. Ashby were held from the Bethel Chapel church Friday at 2 p. m. with Rev. F. C. McCallon, pastor of the local Church of Christ officiating and the Miller Funeral Service in charge. Interment was made in the Bethel Chapel cemetery.

Samantha Alice Manley, daughter of William and Sarah Manley, was born April 12, 1860, on a farm in Lucas county, three miles west of Norwood, Iowa, and passed away at an Osceola hospital, January 22, at the age of 80 years, 9 months and 10 days.

Her parents were pioneer settlers, and she is the last survivor of a family of seven children.

She was converted under the preaching of Rev. George Smith at the old Log Church at old Jacksonville, 1 1/2 miles east of Jay, and joined the Missionary Baptist church, retaining her membership with the Christian Union Church at Bethel Chapel. She had been a faithful follower of Christ for over sixty years.

She was united in marriage with John Hart, September 28, 1879, and to this union were born four children. They are: Mrs. Martha Powell, of near Jay; Abram, at home; William M. of Nevada, Iowa, and Erl F. of near Woodburn.

Mr. Hart, the husband, and father of the above four children passed away in March 1904, leaving Mrs. Hart a widow.

On July 6, 1920 she was again united in marriage to G. L. Ashby who at this time had six children by a former marriage. Mrs. Ashby was always a devoted companion and a good mother, so good that her stepchildren always loved her and at all times called her mother.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband Mr. Ashby, her own children as mentioned above; also her stepchildren: Mrs. R. G. Keyto and Mrs. J. W. Wallace of Des Moines, Iowa; Jesse R. Ashby of Rockford, Ill.; Lewis H. Ashby of St. Louis, Mo. and Mrs. W. W. Pool of Odem, Texas. Mrs. E. J. Crow of Taft, Texas preceded her stepmother in death.

She also leaves nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and other relatives, and a host of friends.

Her entire life was spent near her last home east of Jay.

A faithful wife and mother has gone to her eternal home; her earthly course is finished.
