Mary Arnett Ashby

Mrs. Mary Arnett Ashby was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, August 23, 1840, and departed this life December 12, 1919, at the age of 79 years, 3 months and 19 days. It was at this place she met Milton Ashby to whom she was married on June 19, 1857. Immediately after their marriage they came to Clarke county, Iowa, where they resided until death came. She has lived in Osceola more than 25 years. She gave her life to Christ and his work in her girlhood days and all who knew her will testify to the fact that she has tried to live a devoted christian life. She came to this county in the pioneer days when it was necessary to endure the hardships of the early days. But all this was endured very patiently for the sake of the future of her family. She, as all true mothers, loved her family and home and always made it as pleasant as possible for them. She was a great lover of nature and would spend hours with her flowers and her garden, for in them she could see the beauty of the great program of God. She was very active in the church during the time of her life when she was able and placed great emphasis on the fact that it was the most important institution in the world. To this union nine children were born, five of which, with the husband, having preceded her to the other world many years ago. She has walked without the companionship of husband for 26 years. Those who are left to miss this mother and sister are, one daughter, Mrs. Sally Mongar of Osceola, Iowa; three sons Oliver Ashby of Osceola, Iowa; Thomas Ashby of Osceola, Iowa; James Ashby of Weldon, Iowa; also one brother, Jacob Arnett of Osceola, Iowa, 18 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. Besides these mentioned she has a great host of friends whose sympathies are extended in the sad hour of their bereavement. Funeral services were held from the Church of Christ at 2:30 Sunday afternoon conducted by the pastor, P. G. Dennis.
