"Lt. Col. Clayton Pearl Scott (USAF RET), son of Pearl A. Scott and Margaret Baker Scott, was born May 26, 1920, in Garden Grove, and passed away on Jan. 28, 2009, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center at 88 years of age. Clayton grew up in the Garden Grove/Pleasanton area and graduated from the Cainsville High School in Cainsville, Mo. He completed an aircraft fabrication course in Lincold, Neb. and later worked for the Curtis Aircraft in Buffalo, NY. Clayton enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942 and served in the European Theatre during World War II. He was released from active duty and accepted a commission in the Reserve of the Army Air Force in 1945. He was united in marriage to Lena Rosemond Miller on March 8, 1946 in Des Moines. He re-enlisted in September 1946, and retired from the Air Force in 1965 with the grade of Lieutenant Colonel after 23 years of service. It was at this time that he and his family moved back to Iowa. After retirement from the military, Clayton held positions with the Iowa State Employment Service, South Central Iowa Community Action Program, Southern Iowa Council of Government and the Clarke County Development Corporation, which proved to be the most fulfilling. In 1992, he retired from the position of Executive Secretary of the Development Corporation. He continued with many volunteer positions, including SICOG, SCICAP, and the Resource Conservation and Development committee. One of the more interesting volunteer positions included the 4-H livestock auction sales and the Clarke County Fair. Clayton was a past-president and Paul Harris Fellow of the Osceola Rotary Club and was honored in 1991 with the Community Service Award. He was also a member of Davis-Pence American Legion Post #69 and enjoyed his various retired Air Force organizations, gardening and tending to his tomato plants. Clayton and Rose were parents to three daughters, Stephanie Gaye in 1948, Sally (Sara Jane) in 1952 and Roseanne, who only lived three days, in 1953. Those relatives who preceded Clayton in death were his parents, daughter Roseanne; wife Rose; brother Kenneth Scott and sister, Pauline Allen. He leaves to cherish his memory: daughters, Stephanie Scott of Mt. Vernon and Sally (husband, Scott) Frey of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandsons, Che' Frey (wife, Jennifer) of Centennial, Colo. and Nathaniel Levi Scott Nidey (wife Jordan Kaufman Nidey) of Ellicott City, Md.; great grandchildren, Logan Rose and Rylee Jane Frey of Centennial, Colo. and Honora Pearl Nidey of Ellicott City, Md.; sisters, Ione Jones of Madrid, Dorothy (husband Archie) Claycomb of Blythdale, Mo., and Doris Caldwell of Gastonia, NC, sister-in-law Imogene Morris of Des Moines, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends." Clayton's funeral was held 2 February 2009, and he was buried beside Rose at Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola, Iowa. (The Osceola Sentinel-Tribune, Osceola, Iowa, 5 February 2009, pg. 3)
