Luther, only son of James H. and Ollie Trumbo departed this life on Sunday morning, February 26, 1888, at the residence of Mathias Trumbo, one mile north of Liberty, Iowa, aged three years, seven months and two days. The cause of this child’s death was, it seems, one of those unforeseen accidents which come along the pathway of life and too often deprive us of our loved ones.

On Wednesday, the 22nd, Mrs. Trumbo, with her children were visiting their parents. In the afternoon the child went into an adjoining room, occupied by another son of Mrs. Trumbo, and succeeded in getting from a shelf a bottle of carbolic acid and took, it is supposed, quite a swallow of the deadly poison. Drs. Serber and Holloway were called immediately and all was done that could be to alleviate the pain and to counteract the poison, but without success. The child lingered along until Sunday morning and he passed away.

Luther was a bright child and was the joy and pride of his parents, whose grief and sorrow seem to be more than they can bear; yet their trust in Christ, whom alone can give strength and comfort, and who has said, “Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not; … the kingdom of Heaven.”

The funeral took place from Bethel Chapel Monday at 10 a.m. Rev. J.A. Morris conducing the exercises.
