IVA CARMEN CALAWAY

Iva Carmen Calaway, daughter of Clarence and Jane Porterfield Hamilton, was born Aug. 29, 1896, in Warren County near Medora and died Oct. 20, 1993, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. She was 97.

She received her education in the rural schools of Clarke County and was married to Ivan Calaway March 2, 1916, at Osceola. The couple became the parents of six children.

A lifelong resident of Clarke and Warren Counties, Mrs. Calaway spent the last six months at Norwalk Manor in Norwalk. She was a member of the Women's Relief Corp and Friendly Garden Club in New Virginia. Mrs. Calaway was a devoted member of the Methodist Church at New Virginia and spent many hours quilting there.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; daughter, Vera Louise; two sons, Everett Cecil and Merrill Dean; four sisters, three brothers and a great granddaughter.

Mrs. Calaway is survived by her daughters, Velma Peterson and her husband, Alvin Peterson, of Anita and Doris Taylor of Panora; son, Russell Calaway and his wife, Rosemarie Calaway of Colorado Springs, Colo.; sister, Zola Copeland of Des Moines; sisters-in-law, Alice Hamilton of Newton and Olive Bullington of Indianola; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren as well as other relatives and a host of friends.

Services for Mrs. Calaway were Sunday at the United Methodist Church in New Virginia, the Rev. Lillian Gallo-Seagren officiating. The organist was Clyta Howell.

Casket bearers were Dennis Calaway, Roger Young, Gary Christensen, Russell Strawn, Martin Jacobs and Brent Baughman. Interment was in Bethel Chapel Cemetery in Clarke County.

Iva Hamilton Callaway, 97, died and was buried Sunday in the Bethel Chapel cemetery. She was raised north of the Bethel Chapel Church, but had lived in New Virginia for several years.
