Obituary for Frank Townsend

Frank Edward Townsend, son of Virgil Edward Townsend and Ethel Mae Baker Townsend was born March 28, 1926 in Osceola, Iowa and passed from this life Tuesday, November 21, 2017 at Sunny View Care Center at 91 years of age.

Frank received his education in schools of Clarke County. Frank served his country with the United States Navy during World War II, attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class.

Frank was united in marriage to Betty Mateer on May 30, 1948 and three children, Clayton, Debra and Sharon blessed this union. Frank and Betty spent nearly fifty-one years of marriage together before her passing in 1999. Later in life Frank married Doris Mongar on August 25, 2002 in Osceola, Iowa.

Frank spent his working life in heavy equipment, operating his own business, Townsend Construction for many years. He began working with Clayton Mateer and eventually sold the grading business to Donnie Goodrich in 1997 after a number of years. Frank continued to remain active and helped Donnie occasionally until he was nearly 87. Frank was a member of the Osceola Eagles Lodge #3495 in Osceola as well as the V.F.W. in Osceola, Iowa.

Frank enjoyed traveling to Texas where he attended about every Jam session he could find. He also enjoyed fishing, playing pitch, dancing, driving the countryside looking at the many ponds he built over the years; reading country western books and tinkering with his brother making all sorts of different things. but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

Those relatives who preceded Frank in death were him parents; first wife, Betty J. Townsend, brother, Virgil Dean Townsend and sister, Leora Siefkas.

Frank leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Doris Townsend of Osceola, IA; son, Clayton (Laurie) Townsend of Germantown, MD; daughter, Debra (Gregory) Culbertson of Elkton, MD; and daughter, Sharon (Kevin Burns) Smith of Ankeny, IA; 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 17 step-children, 34 step-grandchildren, 56 step-great grandchildren, 12 step great-great grandchildren as well as other relatives and many friends.
