At his home in Charles City, July 8, 1901, occurred the death of Joseph W. Dickson, aged 62 years, 9 months and 15 days.

He was born at Scales Mound, near Galena, Illinois, Sept. 23, 1838, where he lived until 1855, when with his father's family he emigrated to Iowa, settling near Chickasaw, Chickasaw county.

He went south in 1859 with his brother John, staying in Tennessee and Missouri until 1861, when together they returned north and enlisted in the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. After three years he was discharged and re-enlisted in the First Regiment of Hancock's Veteran Volunteers and was again discharged Dec. 13, 1865.

Returning to his home, he was united in marriage to Sarah C. Hine, May 21, 1878. Six children came by this union; Minnie R., dying in infancy George H., when 10 years old, Clara B., Marshall J., Blanche E. and Cora M. A wife, four children and three sisters remain to mourn his loss.

He resided on his farm two miles northwest of Ionia until last spring, when he moved to Charles City to make his future home.

He joined the Congregational church at Ionia when it was organized and has been a member ever since. He professed a simple faith in Christ and died firmly trusting in his soul's salvation.

He was honest and upright, charitable to a fault, and, being possessed of a fearless spirit, he won the respect of the many with whom he came in contact.

Rest, father, in that distant land
Where troubles never be.
In joy and peace and happiness
Thou art eternally.
