Mass will be held today (Wednesday) for Daniel G Shortley, 69, of State Center, who died Sunday at MACH following a lingering illness. Father Claude Norton and Fther Matthew Beelner of Central City will officiate at St Joseph's Church and burial will follow in St Joseph's Cemetery.

Born August 5, 1914 in New Hampton, he was the son of Samuel and Agnes Wentz Shortley and was reared and educated in that area. On November 16, 1937 he was married to Lucille Beier at Lawler. They farmed in Chickasaw County until moving to State Center in 1945. He operated the Shortley Elevator and hog buying station until retirement in 1976.

Mr Shortley was a member of St Joseph's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a past member of the State Center First Department, Lions and Moose Lodge. He had served for several years on the State Center City Council.

Survivors include his wife and three daughters, Dorothy (Mrs Ray) Torres, Shawnee, KS; Marilyn (Mrs Francis) Fuller, Carrollton, TX and Sandy Shortley of State Center. Also surviving are a brother, Harold of Eldora and a sister Leona of New Hampton, four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother and one granddaughter.
