BIOGRAPHY OF ANDREW ANTHONY AND ROSE ELLEN KIRK HUGHES

Andrew Anthony (Andy) Hughes was born on April 6, 1873 in Cresco, Iowa. His father was William Hughes, who was born December 14, 1824 in Knock, County Mayo, Ireland. Andrew’s mother was Catherine McAndrew who was born October 14, 1843. Catherine was also from Knock, Ireland. William and Catherine are both buried in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Iowa.

Rose Ellen (Nellie) Kirk was born July 3, 1875 in Cuba, Lake County, Illinois. Her father was Patrick Kirk who was born in March 3, 1844 in Townland of North Comasasana, County Monaghan, Ireland. Her mother, Bridget Ann Noon was born on June 1, 1853 in Cuba, Lake County, Illinois. Patrick and Bridget are both buried in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Cemetery in Lawler, Iowa.

Andy moved with his parents from Cresco to Medford, Minnesota as his father worked on the railroads before settling in New Hampton in 1876. Andy attended local schools and began working for the bus, dray and coal firm of Wing and Miller in 1887. In 1904 Andy started his own independent dray firm and by 1909 had joined several partners to take over the dray business and formed the firm of Kenyon, Shaffer and Hughes.

Nellie had attended local schools and had been sent to Chicago to attend the Academy of Our Lady. Nellie received her teaching certificate and became an instructor in the Chickasaw County common schools. She was assigned to be the instructor at the red brick school five miles west of New Hampton on Highway 18. It was during her term at this school that she first met Andy Hughes.

Rev. Father Garrahan married Andrew and Rose Ellen in Lawler on April 18, 1899.

Andy and Nellie lived in New Hampton throughout their lives. Andy and Nellie are buried in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Iowa.

To Andy and Nellie’s marriage were born nine children:

·Leo Anthony, born Aug. 3, 1900. Leo died when he was three years old.

·Olive born Oct. 13, 1902. Olive married Kenneth Barnes of Cresco, IA. Olive and Ken had one son, Patrick. Olive died when she was 93 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Iowa.

·Harold Andrew died as an infant.

·Kathleen Mae born Feb. 4, 1905. Kathleen died when she was 16 years old.

·William J. (Bud) born Feb. 13, 1907. Bud died when he was 21 years old of a heart ailment.

·Helen Elizabeth born Jun 25, 1911. Helen married Charles Peterson of Calmar, IA. They lived IN Mount Pleasant but spent most of their lives in Webster City, IA. Helen died when she was 82. Helen and Charlie are buried in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Iowa.

·Rosemary (Hoppy) born April 30, 1913. Hoppy lived in New Hampton throughout her life. Hoppy died when she was 82 years old and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton, Iowa.

·Patrick Charles born Mar 28, 1915. Pat married Marcela Swelha of Alta Vista, IA. Pat and Marcela had one son, Gary and one daughter, Joan. Pat died when he was 72 years old. Pat and Marcela are buried in Garden of Memories Cemetery, Waterloo, Iowa.

·Josephine Margaret born Jul 30, 1917. Jo married Cletus J. Offerman of Alta Vista, IA. Jo and Cletus had three sons, Mike, Tom & Dick and three daughters, Ann, Jane & Mary. Jo died when she was 82 years old and Cletus died when he was 74 years old. Jo and Cletus are buried in Calvary Cemetery, Elma, Iowa.
