Joseph Clyde Byerly, 80, of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, April 13, at his home on East Maple St. in Cherokee following a brief illness.

There will be no services. Mr. Byerly was cremated and interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Memorials may be sent to Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital Hospice Center, Cherokee, Iowa 51012.

Joe was born January 27, 1916 in Quimby, Iowa to Jess M. and Katherine (Stroud) Byerly. He attended schools in Quimby and Meriden, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to Cherokee. He worked as a fireman for the Union Pacific Railroad and then joined his brother in operating Simmy and Joe’s Bar and Café in Cherokee. He later worked in California in the retail dairy business until his retirement. He was loved and will be missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Edith; three sons and five daughters: Garry Byerly and his wife Judy of Sandy, Utah; David Byerly and his wife Barb of Ogden, Utah; Kevin Byerly of Downey, California; Sharon McAndrews and her husband Rich of Billings, Montana; Connie O’Neal of Cheyenne, Wyoming; Judy Kinney and her husband Tim of Cherokee, Iowa; Robin Byerly of California; Helen Brown and her husband Charlie of Windham, Ohio; 13 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters: Kenneth Byerly and his wife Viola of Cherokee, Iowa; Simmy Byerly of Los Molinos, California; Jay Byerly and his wife Kathleen of Bothell, Washington; Lou Clark and her husband Alex of Janesville, Wisc.; Genevieve Day of Janesville, Wisc.; also many nieces nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Patricia, a son Terry, a grandson and a granddaughter.
