MASON CITY — Daniel Stephen Grant Sr., 56, of 137 15th St. N.W., died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2001) at the veteran's hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at the first Church of the Nazarene, 507 Carolina S. Ave., with the Rev. Curtis D. Delong officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation was held Tuesday at the Fullerton Family of Funeral Homes, 123 Second St. S.E. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services at the church. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Daniel S. Grant, Sr., Memorial Fund.

Daniel was born on Aug. 24, 1944, the only son of five children born to Donald and Marcella "Holub" Grant. He attended school in Mason City and then joined the Army in 1960 where he finished his schooling. Daniel was honorably discharged from the service in 1964.

He was united in marriage to Bernice Mikkelsen on Dec. 31, 1966, at the Salvation Army Church in Pontiac, Michigan. To this union were born four children. For the next five years they made their home there and he was a carrier for the United States Postal Service.

In 1971 they returned to Mason City where he was employed at various jobs in North Iowa including at Winnebago, Clear Lake Bakery, the Salvation Army, Domino's Pizza, and Gerard of Iowa. He was currently employed as a transit driver for the city of Mason City.

He loved his grandbabies, cross- word puzzles, and watching game shows. He never met a stranger and had a keen knack with people, making them feel right at home.

Those thankful in sharing Daniel's life include his wife of 34 years, Bernice; two daughters, Michelle and her husband, Ray Hancock, of Urbandale, and Christina and her husband, John Crom; two sons, Daniel "JR" and his wife, Heidi Grant Jr. and Jeffery Grant, all of Mason City; four grandchildren, Samantha Hancock, Brittnee Crom, Cassandra Hoveland, and Savanna Grant; his stepfather, Lynn Turbett, of Mason City; four sisters, Donna and her husband, Maynard Kaduce, Sue and her husband, Howard Nash, Frankie and her late husband, Gary Knajdek, all of Michigan, and Tammy and her husband, Mike Herzog, of Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law, Gary Knajdek.
