MASON CITY -- John Golbuff, 88, of 25 West View Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 23, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with Monsignor Joseph J. Slepicka and the Rev. Jon M. Seda concelebrating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, with full military honors conducted by members of Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with a rosary being said at 5:30 p.m., followed by a scriptural wake service. Memorials may be directed to the John Golbuff Memorial Fund.

John Golbuff was born May 30, 1920, in Belmond, the son of George and Mary Golbuff. He attended country school in Garner and Mason City. John enlisted in Army in 1942. During World War II he served in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged. After the war he returned to Mason City and was employed for 32 years with Decker Armour Country Trucking. John worked for Winnebago Industries and drove for the city transit busses during the summertime.

John was united in marriage to Marjorie Tatone on April 29, 1950, in Mason City at the Holy Family Parsonage; to this union three sons were born.

John enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing poker, watching sports, especially the Chicago Cubs, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. John and Marge enjoyed wintering in southern Texas. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. John was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and was a lifetime member of the VFW.

John is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Golbuff of Mason City; sons, Tim (Patti) Golbuff of Glenview, Ill., Tom (Coleen) "Sissy" Golbuff of Olathe, Kan.; grandchildren, Graham Golbuff and Natalie Golbuff, both of Evanston, Ill., Laura Silverman and Zachary Silverman, both of Glenview, Ill., John Cody (Abby) Golbuff of Louisburg, Kan., and Jennifer Golbuff of Olathe, Kan.; siblings, Katherine Weide of Alahambra, Calif., Alex (Susan) Golbuff of Ventura, Calif.; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, infant son, brothers, George, William and Nick Golbuff, sisters, Ann Swinehart and Alice Jessen.
