Quentin was born June 3, 1926, the son of Edward and Clara (Rodemeyer) Bertelsen on a farm in rural Sheffield. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Lavender in 1954. The couple lived and farmed south of Thornton for 35 years before moving northwest of Mason City on a farm they purchased. They would later move into Mason City in 2005.

Quentin’s love for the land and his passion for working hard drove his farming career and his ethics for living. He enjoyed reading, discussing politics and socializing with friends and family. Over the years the couple enjoyed traveling and seeing the country. Quentin worked for Opportunity Village as a house parent with Marilyn for 13 years. Family was of the utmost importance to Quentin, he looked forward to time with his grandchildren, especially his great-grandchildren. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

Those thankful for having shared in Quentin’s life include his children, Kathy (Jerry) Hirsch, Bruce (Carla) Bertelsen; grandchildren, Ryan (Holly) Hirsch, Eric (Devan) Hirsch, Alyssa and fiancé Nick Korwin, Jeremy (Tina) Bertelsen; great-grandchildren, Brody, Aslyn, Kyran, Ellie, Talia Hirsch; sisters, Janet VanEvery, Loraine Barkhurst; brother, Randy Bertelsen; brother-in-law, Ron Lavender; and several nieces and nephews.

Quentin went to be with Marilyn, his beloved family and friends and will be missed dearly by all.

The family would like to thank all those at Kentucky Ridge Assisted Living and Hospice of North Iowa for all the compassion and care extended to Quentin.
