Velda (Caspers) Watkins, 86, formerly of Rockwell, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 at the Good Shepherd Nursing home. Online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com.
A Memorial Service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, at St. Peterís Lutheran Church, 502 Second St. S., Rockwell. The Rev. Rhea Evanson will be officiating.
The family will greet relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in the Rockwell Cemetery. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rockwell.
Velda was born near Thornton on March 19, 1927, the daughter of August Emil Caspers and Selma Fredericka (Timcke) Caspers. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Thornton. At a young age, the family moved to a farm near Swaledale. She then became a member of St. Peterís Lutheran Church in Rockwell and the Martha Circle.
She attended county school Geneso #3 for her first eight years of school, graduating from Swaledale High School with the class of 1944. The same year, she went to work for Osco Drug for 16 years and then Family Drug for six years. In 1966, she started working in different departments of the Park Clinic and she retired from there in 1993. After retiring, she worked part-time at the First Citizenís National Bank.
On May 4, 1963, she married Paul W. Watkins at St. Peterís Lutheran Church. She was fortunate to travel with Paul to many of his insurance conventions in the United States and Europe. She loved people, beautiful music, dancing and loved to cook, especially when her nieces and nephews came to visit. She enjoyed life to the fullest and never lost her great sense of humor.
She is survived by nieces and nephews: Marilyn Winton, Plymouth, Minn., Tom (Margaret) Caspers, Anacortes, Wash., Jane (Michael) Speckel, Buffalo, Minn., Shawn Gagnon, Tacoma, Wash., Sheryl (David) Hinds, Schertz, Texas, Kaye (James) Rosvold, Eagan, Minn., John (Martha) Speckel, Mankato, Minn., Sarah (Derrick) Hudyma, Buffalo, Minn., Thomas (Kaarin) Speckel, Jacksonville, N.C.; many great nieces and nephews; special friends Don and Margaret Huygens; two twin daughters she gave up at birth and were reunited in 1997, Kathy (Gale) Bassett and Kris (Scott) Wheeler; grandchildren, Jake (Shanna) Bassett and Joshua Bassett, Jered Wheeler and Hannah Wheeler; great-granddaughter Monroe Bassett; and many other relatives and friends.
Her husband, Paul, her parents, August and Selma, and her two brothers, LeRoy and Delbert Caspers, preceded Velda in death.
Veldaís family would like to thank the staff at Good Shepherd Health Center for the wonderful care she received while residing there.
