Lois Virginia Holmes, 83, of Mason City, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Hospice of North Iowa. Online condolences may be left at www.fullertonfh.com.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will also be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City, and one hour prior to the services Wednesday at the church.

Lois Holmes was born on Jan. 30, 1931, in Peever, S.D., to Arthur and Ruby Welch. She grew up in South Dakota and moved to Mason City during her sophomore year of high school then graduated from Mason City High School.

It was in high school that she met her sweetheart Charles Holmes. They were united in marriage June 30, and were together for almost 60 years until he died in 2011. To this union three children were born.

Lois spent her life as a homemaker. She volunteered for many years at Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a proud servant of God and enjoyed helping others.
Lois was a family person and insisted on cooking for every family get-together. She made the best fried chicken, gravy, pies, fudge, and homemade mints. Lois liked gardening. She grew potatoes and canned tomatoes to make salsa and tomato juice. She loved sharing her homemade goodies. Every year Lois would travel back to South Dakota, which was very important to her.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren; they were her pride and joy.

Lois loved going for coffee with her family and friends. When she wasn’t out and about she enjoyed her jigsaw puzzles at home. Lois sewed quilts and crocheted. She was a very crafty person. Lois really liked bowling and was on a bowling team for several years. She will be remembered for her wonderful cooking and helpful hand to others.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two children, Jody (Dixie) Holmes and Shellie (Randy) Knapp; grandchildren, Travis Knapp, David (Jessi) Holmes, and Amber (Ray) Stearns; great-grandchildren, Michael Knapp, Mitchell Knapp, Jordynn Knapp, Jaidynn Knapp, Parker Stearns, Mackenzie Stearns, Kathrine Holmes, and Lillian Holmes; and two brothers, Eugene Welch and Charles Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; son, Charles Michael Holmes; parents; sister, Arlyce Faille and stepfather Charles Jackson.
