Michael “Mike” Paul Chavez, 50, of Mason City, died Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016, at home, surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church, 722 N. Adams Ave., Mason City, with an Epiphany Parish clergyman officiating.

Inurnment will be at Elmwood–St. Joseph Cemetery.

A visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2016, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapels, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City. A rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m., with a scriptural wake to follow.

Family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church.

Michael "Mike" Paul Chavez, was born on Aug. 29, 1965, in Mason City, the son of Balentin and Lucy (Gomez) Chavez.

He received his education in the Mason City Community School, graduating in 1983. After completing his schooling, he started working for Armour Meat Packing Company in Mason City before working as a heavy equipment operator for 22 years for Holcim Corporation before its closing and then worked for Alliant Energy in Williams, Iowa, until becoming ill.

Mike enjoyed watching the Dallas Cowboys, Iowa Hawkeyes, being outdoors, gardening, and music especially the 80's rock music, but his great love and enjoyment was being with his family and significant other, Carletta Thomas, who has taken care of him at his home since becoming ill.

He was a member of Epiphany Parish Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Micah Chavez of Cedar Falls, and Zachary Chavez of Mason City; his mother, Lucy Chavez of Mason City; his significant other, Carletta Thomas of Mason City; his brothers, Tony (Cathy) Chavez of Iowa City, David Chavez of Des Moines; his sister, Elizabeth (Aaron) Zalis of Rolla, MO; as well as several nieces, nephews; and many other extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Balentin Chavez, who died on March 4, 2010.
